Britons will not have to wait long to tuck into hot-cross buns and indulge in Easter eggs in 2025.

Unlike other holidays, Easter is not fixed to a specific date, instead depending on the lunar calendar.

The event, celebrated on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal equinox, is connected to the Jewish festival of Passover.

The earliest Easter Sunday was held on March 22 all the way back in 1818.

Experts believe the same date won't mark Easter again until at least 2285. Meanwhile, the latest Easter Sunday was celebrated on April 25 in 1943.

Despite this year's celebrations coming particularly late, the same date won't mark Easter Sunday until 2038. MPs had previously attempted to lock in the date for Easter celebrations.

The Easter Act of 1928 looked to fix the event to the Sunday following the second Saturday in April, sandwiching celebrations between April 9 and April 15.

But Britons will have to wait just under 50 days for Easter celebrations in 2025.

The exact date of this year's Easter Sunday is April 20 and children will also be handed a lengthy break from the classroom.

The two-week break will soon be upon us, bringing the familiar scramble for childcare arrangements. Many families will also be stocking up on chocolate eggs for traditional Easter egg hunts.

While a time for family festivities, Easter remains an important religious occasion in the calendar. Good Friday will be observed on April 18, with April 21's Easter Monday creating a four-day weekend.

However, only England, Wales and Northern Ireland will have the opportunity to formally mark the occasion. The UK observes bank holidays during this period, though dates shift each year.

Easter Sunday will fall on April 20, 2025, nearly a month later than the previous year. Good Friday will be observed on April 18.

Easter Monday follows on April 21, creating a four-day weekend for those in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Scotland does not formally mark Easter as a nationwide bank holiday.

However, some local authorities hand the occasion informal recognition due to its religious significance. Most schools in the UK will observe Easter holidays from April 7 to April 21, 2025.

Pupils are expected to return to classrooms on Tuesday, April 22. It remains important to note that holiday schedules can vary significantly by region.

Parents are advised to check with their children's schools for specific term dates. This two-week break comes relatively soon after the February half-term that families have just navigated.

Despite Easter marking the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, a cornerstone of Christian faith, the occasion now blends faith with family celebrations. Many associate the beginning of Easter celebrations to come from Lent observations, which is ushered in by Pancake Day.

Millions of Christians worldwide participate in this 40-day fast until Holy Thursday. The observance involves abstaining from treats such as biscuits, crisps, and chocolate.

Lent always follows Shrove Tuesday, which Britons sometimes refer to as Pancake Day, and represents a time for Christians to engage in penance.
