America is facing a fresh wildfire threat as rocketing temperatures and storms unleash a surge of incendiary winds.

A raft of ‘critical fire’ risk warnings are in force across southern states as the region once again hits flash point.

Flames will be driven by a powerful bout of storms supercharged by battling Arctic and tropical weather systems.

The US National Weather Service has warnings in force across Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Colorado.

A spokesman said: “There is an increasing threat for a substantial severe weather outbreak by midweek over the Lower and Middle Mississippi Valley.

“For areas farther south and east toward the southern High Plains, this system will bring a new surge of strong, gusty winds which coupled with dry air with low relative humidity, and this will support fairly widespread critical fire danger concerns.”

The US is facing the first ‘significant severe-weather threat’ of spring with strong winds threatening disruption and damage.

South-eastern states are on alert for tornadoes, hailstorms and drenching electrical eruptions.

The storm threat will ramp up through the start of the week, with gusts of 90mph possible in parts.

AccuWeather meteorologist and senior director of forecasting operations Dan DePodwin said: “Families and businesses should prepare for the threat of tornadoes striking after dark on Tuesday night.

“The first significant threat of severe weather in March could bring tornadoes, hail, and damaging wind gusts to parts of the South Central and Southeast states.

“Hundreds of flight delays and cancellations are expected at airports and hubs across the South Central and Southeast region Tuesday through Wednesday night, including airports in Houston, New Orleans, and Atlanta.”

Americans are urged to prepare a ‘safety plan’ as the first week of spring erupts into severe weather.

South-eastern states are at particular risk of tornadoes through the coming days, experts warn.

These will arrive armed with rain, hail and damaging winds with people in affected regions urged to avoid travel.

Weather Channel meteorologist Tiffany Savona said: “Severe weather season is upon us, so people across the south need to have their safety plan in place.

“The greatest threat for damaging wind gusts, hail and tornadoes stretches from Memphis to Little Rock, and down to Shreveport and Jackson.

“Storms will fire up across Texas on Tuesday before moving east, and so it is important people have ways to get warnings as they are sleeping as night-time tornadoes are more dangerous.”

The sudden explosion in severe weather is being driven by a battle straddling the US between the Arctic and the tropics.

Temperatures across southern states this week will hit 90F while to the north, another cold snap hits.

Volatile atmospheric conditions bubbling up through the end of winter will drive a powerful storm cluster.

Jim Dale, US meteorologist for British Weather Services and co-author of ‘Surviving Extreme Weather’, said: “Warm air from the Gulf of Mexico hitting colder air to the north will bring the ingredients together for a stormy start to the season, which will bring the risk of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms.

“There is going to be a battle between winter’s passing and the arrival of spring, which is a classic storm situation.”
