Police have identified the suspect in the Amsterdam stabbing attack as a 30-year-old Ukrainian man from the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine.

The man is accused of stabbing five people in Amsterdam's Sint Nicolaasstraat on Thursday.

He will appear before an examining magistrate at Amsterdam court on April 1, who will decide whether he can continue to be detained ahead of trial.

Investigators say the suspect checked into an Amsterdam hotel on 26 March.

The attack left five people injured: A 67-year-old American woman, a 69-year-old American man, a 26-year-old Polish man, a 73-year-old Belgian woman and a 19-year-old local woman.

Police say the suspect used several knives in what appeared to be random attacks.

Eyewitnesses described seeing a "knife of at least 10cm sticking out" of a young woman's back, between her shoulders.

The suspect was apprehended in nearby Gravenstraat shortly after the incident.

His escape was thwarted by a brave British tourist who chased him down and tackled him to the ground.

Dramatic CCTV footage captured the moment the man sprinted through a narrow street in pursuit of the attacker.

The tourist, now dubbed the "hero of the Dam", pinned down the suspect with his knee to prevent further assaults.

The suspect reportedly injured his leg during the citizen's arrest outside the Febo fast food restaurant.

The British man was yesterday recognised for his bravery by Amsterdam's mayor Femke Halsema, who presented him with an award for his "heroic" actions.

"This afternoon I will talk to the citizen who managed to overpower the suspect. To hear his story and to be able to thank him for his heroic act," the mayor wrote on Instagram.

"He is a very modest British man," she added in an interview with Dutch TV channel AT5, "He has no desire to become famous. He is now mainly concerned with the victims, he feels responsible for them."

The 26-year-old Polish man injured in the attack has since been discharged from hospital.

The other four victims remain in hospital but are in a stable condition.

Police are still investigating the motive behind the attack.

Dutch investigators said in a statement: "The investigation team is still busy with the investigation. We can therefore not answer any other questions at this time."

The Amsterdam police force praised the British tourist's actions as "heroic", according to De Telegraaf.

A police spokesman told AD: "He did a great job. We're very proud of him, but we also want to point out that you need to be very careful if you want to make a citizen's arrest."

Maarten Brinkm, head of the ACP police union, added: "A big thumbs-up for the decisive action of this hero. The heroic citizen can count on massive praise."
