Treasury Minister James Murray has described Ukraine's agreement to a proposed 30-day ceasefire as a "remarkable breakthrough".
Speaking to GB News, Murray praised the diplomatic efforts between the US and Ukrainian leaders.
"I think it's a remarkable breakthrough, and it's testament to the work between President Trump and President Zelensky in recent days," he said.
The Treasury Minister emphasised that Russia now faces pressure to respond to the proposal.
"It's up to Russia to now respond to the ceasefire proposal, Russia to agree to that deal that's on the table," Murray stated.
He added that the UK would "continue to play our role as an honest broker" in the ongoing peace process.
The development marks a potential turning point in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
Murray outlined the UK Government's next steps in supporting the peace process.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:
"The Prime Minister is looking to convene world leaders this Saturday to continue playing the role the UK has been playing to try and move us towards peace in the war between Ukraine and Russia," he told GB News.
The Treasury Minister's comments suggest the UK is actively working behind the scenes to capitalise on this diplomatic opening.
The weekend summit could prove crucial in determining whether the temporary ceasefire leads to more lasting peace negotiations.
Murray also addressed President Trump's imposition of trade tariffs on the UK during his GB News appearance.
The Treasury Minister emphasised the Government's commitment to free trade principles despite the setback.
"We want to continue championing open and free trade, but our response is one of pragmatism," Murray explained.
He highlighted that following the Prime Minister's recent Washington visit, the UK has "begun rapid negotiations towards an economic agreement which could involve the elimination of additional tariffs."
Murray stressed that a measured approach would best serve British interests: "What is in the best interests of UK businesses is for us to respond with a cool head, not a knee-jerk response," he said.
