Taylor Swift could be facing a bit of a dilemma after former US President Donald Trump publicly thanked Brittany Mahomes, wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, for her apparent support of his 2024 presidential campaign.
The praise, shared on Trump's social media platform Truth Social, has sparked controversy and raised questions about Mahomes' friendship with pop star Swift.
Trump wrote: "I want to thank beautiful Brittany Mahomes for so strongly defending me, and the fact that MAGA is the greatest and most powerful Political Movement in the History of our now Failing Country."
The statement has highlighted the potential political differences between Mahomes and Swift, a vocal supporter of Democratic candidates.
Swift's fans have reacted strongly, urging the singer to cut ties with Mahomes as the US election approaches.
The controversy surrounding Mahomes' apparent support for Trump began when social media users noticed she had liked a post on Trump's Instagram account outlining the Republican Party's 2024 election platform.
However, Newsweek reported that Mahomes' account was not among the 400,000-plus "likes" on the post at the time of their review.
In response to the backlash, Mahomes shared a post on her Instagram story condemning "haters" and later added: "Contrary to the tone of the world today....you can disagree with someone, and still love them. You can have differing views, and still be kind."
Conservative commentator Candace Owens defended Mahomes, arguing that she should be free to like any post, especially during an election season.
Swift's political leanings stand in stark contrast to Mahomes' apparent stance. The pop icon endorsed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in the 2020 election and has been a vocal supporter of Democratic candidates.
Swift's massive fanbase has reacted strongly to the controversy. One fan wrote on X: "Taylor about to enter football season and NOW brittany mahomes comes out as a trump supporter... i cant remember the last time the taylor nation WASNT in flames i f**ing hate it here."
A second weighed in: "This is so painfully awkward. Taylor Swift really backed herself into a corner associating with these cast of characters. If Taylor shows up in Kansas City tomorrow for the game, then her personal brand wil be cheapened even more if she sits next to Brittany Mahomes. #NFL."
And a third added: "I actually am really embarrassed. Like taylor associating with her and strengthening the 'we can be friends and have different views'. Meanwhile the views are basic human rights she’s previously been vocal about." (sic)
Despite not yet endorsing a candidate for the upcoming election, Swift's influence remains significant. Over 20,000 of her fans recently joined a Zoom webinar for "Swifties for Kamala", raising more than £122,000 for Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz.

Trump's statement on Truth Social not only thanked Mahomes but also included a direct reference to the upcoming Super Bowl: "What a great couple - See you both at the Super Bowl!"
This comment has further fuelled speculation about Mahomes' political leanings and their potential impact on her relationship with Swift.
The former president's praise comes at a crucial time in the US election cycle, with Swift's potential endorsement being closely watched by political analysts.
Swift's influence on voters, particularly young Americans, has been significant in past elections.
Trump has previously attempted to court Swift's support, sharing an image of the singer dressed as Uncle Sam with the caption: "Taylor Swift Wants You To Vote For Donald Trump." Swift has not responded to these overtures.
Despite the political controversy, reports suggest that Swift and Mahomes are still on good terms.
