Watch the moment Donald Trump hits out at the US government and the outgoing President Joe Biden in his inaugural address.

The 47th president said there has been a failure to protect American people, making reference to the southern border crisis.

Joe Biden and outgoing vice president Kamala Harris watched on as Trump lashed out at their failures.

“We must be honest about the challenges we face. While they are plentiful, they will be annihilated by this great momentum that the world is now witnessing in the United States of America”, said Trump.

“As we gather today, our government confronts a crisis of trust. For many years, a radical and corrupt establishment has extracted power and wealth from our citizens, while the pillars of our society lay broken and seemingly incomplete disrepair.

“We now have a government that cannot manage even a simple crisis at home, while at the same time stumbling into a continuing catalog of catastrophic events abroad,” Trump continued.

”It fails to protect our magnificent, law-abiding American citizens but provides sanctuary and protection for dangerous criminals.

“Many from prisons and mental institutions that have illegally entered our country from all over the world.

“We have a government that has given unlimited funding to the defence of foreign borders, but refuses to defend American borders or, more importantly, its own people.”

The indoor ceremony marks the first time since Ronald Reagan's second inauguration 40 years ago that the event has been held inside.

The ceremony was attended by several hundred dignitaries and VIPs, including tech leaders Elon Musk and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who were given prominent seating positions.

In his inaugural address, Trump declared "the golden age of America begins right now" and vowed to end what he called the country's "decline”.

The new president announced plans to declare a national emergency at the southern border and send troops to the region.

He promised to designate drug cartels as foreign terrorist organisations and invoke the Alien Enemies Act to expel gangs.

Trump made reference to the attempt on his life in Butler, Pennsylvania, stating "I was saved by God to make America great again," which drew standing ovations from the crowd.

On trade, he pledged to "tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens" and vowed to boost domestic oil production.
