Your Sky TV and broadband bills are about to get a lot more expensive. The popular television and internet provider has confirmed its latest round of price rises, which will impact (almost) all customers from April.

Sky has confirmed plans to increase broadband and TV bills by 6.2% — more than double the current inflation rate of 2.5%.

If you're already spending £60 a month on satellite television and broadband from the brand, that price hike equates to an extra £3.71 every month — or an extra £44 every year.

The average Briton spends £26.90 a month on broadband alone. If that's roughly what you spend, Sky's annual price hike will add an extra £1.66 to your Direct Debit every month.

These price rises — the largest imposed by Sky in recent memory — will take effect from April 1. Sky says these increases are either in line with or lower than rival providers' incoming price rises.

For comparison, Virgin Media is likely to increase bills for its customers by 7.4%. That changes if you signed-up with Virgin Media after January 9, 2025. In that case, you'll see an extra £3.50 added to your monthly bills instead.

Will you be impacted by the price hike from Sky? The broadcaster has pledged to contact every subscriber who will be affected by the incoming price rise before the April 1, 2025 deadline.

Social tariffs for broadband and mobile will not see prices increase. You'll need to claim Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Employment and Support Allowance, Jobseeker’s Allowance, or Income Support to be eligible to subscribe to a social tariff.

Unlike many of its rivals, Sky will let you walk away from your current contract without paying early termination fees if you're unhappy with the revised monthly bill. Customers with Sky broadband packages will have the right to cancel penalty-free within 30 days of being notified about the price increase.

Unfortunately, this same option does not extend to those who only subscribe to Sky TV packages, unless they purchased their broadband and TV package together at the same time.

Essential TV Bundle from Sky Stream

Sky Stream has never been this affordable. The broadcaster has just launched an affordable new bundle of channels and on-demand services, dubbed TV Essentials. It includes its plug-and-play Sky Stream box, over 100 live channels including Sky Atlantic — the exclusive home of shows like Game of Thrones, And Just Like That, and The White Lotus. You'll also find a subscription to Netflix and Discovery+ included too and can upgrade to Sky Cinema and Sky Sports at an extra cost.

If you're out of the minimum contract term, you can switch at any time regardless of these changes. Renegotiating a new deal with the same provider — and signing-up to a new minimum contract term, or moving to a new company is always the best way to secure the most affordable deal.

Sky Chief Operating Officer, Devesh Raj penned a blog post about the decision to impose a 6.2% increase on large swathes of its television and broadband customers, stating: "I wanted to take this opportunity to explain to our customers why this decision is necessary and why we’re always committed to offering you excellent value."

"At Sky, everything we do is focused on bringing people the joy of a better experience," he adds.

"Whether it’s award-winning content, world-class sports coverage, or reliable broadband, we strive to provide an offering that sets us apart. I’m proud to say we’ve invested heavily over the last twelve months, so our customers now have access to more than ever before.

"This continued investment to deliver the best and most reliable products, along with increased supplier costs, means most of our TV and broadband customers will see a change in their price this year. But we’ve made every effort to minimise the financial impact to you."

Growing demand on the broadband network has pushed Sky to expand its peak broadband network capacity by 27% since 2021, the Chief Operating Officer cited as another reason for the price hike. The company has also worked to reduce broadband faults by 26% in recent years.

Sky has secured rights to Premier League, EFL, F1, England cricket and tennis until the end of the decade. Fixtures will air on dedicated Sky Sports channels. From August, Sky will show 70% more Premier League fixtures than before, with up to 100 additional matches each season.

In the blog post about the price rises, Sky COO Devesh Raj also highlighted the expansion of entertainment offerings available to Sky TV subscribers, including new originals like The Day of the Jackal and The Tattooist of Auschwitz, with more exclusive series planned for the coming months.

"And there’s plenty more to watch in 2025, including The Death of Bunny Munro, The Last of Us, the third seasons of Gangs of London and The White Lotus, as well as the farewell series of our critically acclaimed original comedy, Brassic," the executive writes.

Sky released over 300 software updates to the EntertainmentOS operating system that powers its Sky Glass and Sky Stream devices, making the platform even smarter and introducing new features like a personalised recommendation rail and enhanced voice control options.

Sky TV has already teased the upcoming launch of a mysterious new product in the coming weeks, which it says will be "smarter, brighter and better than ever".

Sky is also offering eligible VIP customers the opportunity to upgrade to Full Fibre broadband at no extra cost.

In January, Ofcom introduced new rules requiring mobile and broadband providers to clearly state potential price rises in pounds and pence during the initial contract. However, these regulations don't apply to Sky as it has never linked its annual price rises to a measure of inflation, unlike Virgin Media O2, BT, EE, Plusnet, and others.

Although Sky still increases monthly bills for its customers every year — the amount varies every year. When the new percentage increase is announced, Sky offers those impacted the flexibility to cancel without incurring a penalty.

It's these differences that mean Sky is not impacted by the latest Ofcom ruling.

The new Ofcom rules specifically target the previous industry practice of adding 3.9% to the rate of inflation. To comply with these new rules, competitors like Vodafone, EE and Virgin Media will now increase prices by a flat pound and pence amount in the coming months.

Sky COO Devesh Raj concludes: "We understand price changes can be unwelcome, but they are necessary to sustain the quality and reliability of the services you value. Our promise remains steadfast: to deliver the best in entertainment, sports, and broadband while ensuring we offer exceptional value."
