A massive fire has broken out at Blairlinn Industrial Estate in Cumbernauld, Scotland, this afternoon, with emergency services rushing to the scene.

The blaze engulfed a single-storey building at the industrial estate, which includes the Wardpark Recycling Centre.



Thick black smoke from the inferno could be seen for miles, with witnesses reporting visibility as far as Cambuslang and across Glasgow's skyline.

Fire crews arrived to find the building "well alight" as the fire rapidly spread through the premises.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service initially dispatched two appliances to tackle the blaze, before sending a further four as the severity became apparent.

A major emergency response was mobilised, with six ambulances attending the scene.

Three special operations response teams (SORT), a paramedic response unit, a trauma team and a resuscitation rapid response unit were also dispatched.

Police Scotland arrived at approximately 3pm to assist with traffic management around the industrial estate.

Officers are helping to coordinate the emergency response as firefighters continue to battle the flames.

Six people have been injured in the blaze, though the extent of their injuries is not yet known.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 14:55 to attend an incident at Blairlinn Industrial Estate, Cumbernauld. Six ambulances, three special operations response teams (SORT), a paramedic response unit, a trauma team and a resuscitation rapid response unit (3RU) were dispatched to the scene.

"Five patients were transported to Glasgow Royal Infirmary and one patient was transported to University Hospital Monklands."

Local reports suggest several business premises have been destroyed in the fire.

Eyewitnesses have taken to social media to describe the frightening scenes unfolding at the industrial estate.

One person wrote on X: "Some fire in Cumbernauld. Hope everyone is ok."

Another local resident expressed fear, saying: "What is going on with all of this smoke? I am scared for my life."

Cumbernauld community news advised on Facebook: "There is a significant fire occurring at Blairlinn Industrial Estate. Emergency services are in attendance and the area should be avoided at present."

They urged those nearby to keep doors and windows closed.

Several buildings surrounding the fire have been evacuated as a precaution, according to Police Scotland.

A police spokesperson said: "Some surrounding buildings are being evacuated as a precaution."

Firefighting crews remain at the scene continuing to battle the blaze.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined as emergency services focus on containing the inferno.

Residents are advised to avoid the area while emergency operations continue.
