A 12th century text from the Vatican Secret Archives supposedly predicts the year of Judgement Day.
In 2027, Jesus will return to judge all people for their actions and determine who will be saved and who will be damned, according to the 900-year-old book titled ‘Prophecy of the Popes’.
The text contains a range of Latin phrases thought to describe every pope since Celestine II in 1143, up until Pope Francis, the current bishop of Rome.
"In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will reign Peter the Roman, who will feed his flock amid many tribulations, after which the seven-hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people," the last passage of the book reads.
While some believe the prophecy suggests Peter will take over as the pope due to Francis’ chronic lung disease, others interpret it as suggesting that Francis will be the final pope.
A 2024 documentary suggests the second theory is true because of a 1585 passage attributed to Pope Sixtus V, which reads: ‘Axle in the midst of a sign’.
Pope Sixtus’s tenure began 442 years after the first pope’s rule, and the passage suggests he is in the middle of the prophecy - thus indicating the end of the world would come 442 years later, in 2027.
Saint Malachy has been credited with writing the book, which Benedictine monk Arnold Wion claimed to have discovered in the Vatican archives in 1595.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS
Though found more than 400 years ago, the prophecy has resurfaced in the light of Pope Francis suffering two episodes of respiratory crisis, which has caused him to be hospitalised for more than two weeks.
Malachy reportedly wrote the prophecy in 1139 after a vision he received during a visit to Rome. However, some scholars have claimed the text is a forgery from the 16th century.
St Malachy was an archbishop originally from Ireland known for his religious reforms, including bringing Irish churches to be more similar to Roman practices.
While the 112 phrases about each future pope come from the specific and highly accurate way each of the popes are described up until 1590, the more current predictions are more vague and open to interpretation.
The book was discussed on Sunday Cool Podcast, where host Josh Hooper commented and theorised how the growing number of crises around the world is stirring up new belief in the controversial prophecy.
However, the Bible specifically warns against predicting the date of the second coming.
Matthew 24:36 reads: "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone."
