The Scottish Parliament was evacuated just seconds after John Swinney answered his final question at this week's First Minister's Questions.
Presiding Officer Alison Johnstone announced that a fire had been reported in the building.
She asked all people to evacuate the building at the end of the session, including those sat in the public gallery.
Johnstone said: "That concludes First Minister's Questions. Can I have your attention please.
"A fire has been reported in this area. Visitors in the public gallery please follow the directions of security staff and evacuate to the public foyer immediately.
"People who require assistance to evacuate and those with a personal emergency evacuation plan requiring the use of a refuge point should move to the nearest available refuge point now."
It later emerged that the fire alarm was just a test.
MSPs returned to the Holyrood Chamber just 12 minutes after Johnstone's test announcement.
However, MSPs had not been told that the announcement was a test in advance of the alarm.
This week's First Minister's Questions was dominated by Donald Trump's decision to impose 10 per cent tariffs on all UK goods.
Scottish Tory leader Russell Findlay warned the decision would impact around £4billion worth of Scottish exports, particularly Scotch whiskey.
In response, Swinney assured the nation that his SNP Government would continue to work with Westminster to protect the best interests of Scottish businesses.
“The impostion of tariffs is not good news,” the First Minister said.
“It will be damaging for economic activity not just in Scotland, but in the UK but across the world.
"There will also be negative implications for the population of the US with what was applied yesterday.
Swinney continued: “We will of course engage with the UK Government who carry the responsibility for international trade.”
The 60-year-old also stressed the Scottish Government would "leave no stone unturned" to take forward the concerns of Scottish industries.
