Rory McIlroy was used as the butt of a joke live on TV from former a White House Chief of Staff while debating the current US presidential election.

The 2024 election for the next US president takes place on November 5 with both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris ramping up their campaigns.

American TV is dominated by coverage of the election with news channels picking apart everything.

But golf strangely crossed over into ABC's 'This Week with George Stephanopoulos' analysis of the election.

Former White House Chief of Staff under Donald Trump, Reince Priebus, was picking apart Vice President Harris' appearance on another ABC programme called 'The View'.

And the 52-year-old, who worked as Trump's White House Chief of Staff for just seven months, used McIlroy's heartbreaking finish at the US Open to illustrate his point.

"She wanted to clarify the two most important issues that are facing these two candidates - the economy and immigration," he said.

"She bombed like Rory at the US Open and she went out there and she said there was nothing she would do that would be different than Joe Biden."

McIlroy looked on course to end his 10-year major drought at the US Open in June.

He held a two-shot lead over Bryson DeChambeau heading into the final five holes before his game deserted him at the worst possible moment.

The Northern Irishman carded three bogeys and missed two putts inside four feet - including the last - to hand DeChambeau the trophy.

The four-time major winner fled from the course as soon as DeChambeau's putt dropped to win the US Open, later describing his collapse as the toughest moment of his career.

McIlroy said at the time: "Yesterday was a tough day, probably the toughest I've had in my nearly 17 years as a professional golfer.

"Firstly, I'd like to congratulate Bryson.

"He is a worthy champion and exactly what professional golf needs right now. I think we can all agree on that."

"But, as I always try to do, I'll look at the positives of the week that far outweigh the negatives.

"As I said at the start of the tournament, I feel closer to winning my next major championship than I ever have.

"The one word that I would describe my career as is resilient. I've shown resilience over and over again in the last 17 years and I will again."
