World number one Scottie Scheffler has taken command of the Texas Children's Houston Open, setting a course record with a stunning eight-under-par 62 in the second round.

Scheffler leads by one shot at 11-under par for the tournament, having remained bogey-free through his first 36 holes.

The American enjoyed the best of the early conditions at Memorial Park before thunderstorms disrupted play.

His impressive performance marks his best round since returning from a hand injury sustained while cooking at Christmas.

Scheffler opened with two birdies and missed just one green in regulation as he added six more birdies throughout his round.

"It was important for me to stay patient out there," said Scheffler. "It was nice to get off to a good start and kind of hold the momentum and keep the card clean."

The world number one is preparing to defend his US Masters title next month.

His commanding performance at Memorial Park has positioned him as the clear favourite heading into the weekend.

Canadian Taylor Pendrith sits one shot back at 10-under par, sharing second place with Colombian Nico Echavarria.

Echavarria was in impressive form, going nine-under for his round when play was suspended.

He faces a challenging chip from the edge of the green on the 17th to save par after driving into the water when bad light stopped play.

Australian Min Woo Lee and American Ryan Gerard are two shots off the lead at nine-under par.

Both players have work to do to complete their second rounds when play resumes.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy produced a late rally to make the cut, sinking three consecutive birdies from the 16th hole.

McIlroy finished with a 66 to reach four-under par for the tournament, seven strokes behind leader Scheffler.

"I holed a couple of putts," McIlroy said. "That was it. It was nice to see a couple putts go in and get finished."

"It was a little dicey there at the end. Nice to finish the round the way I did."

His performance marked an improvement on his level-par opening round while McIlroy and Scheffler are the two hot favourites going into The Masters in April.

The second round was significantly disrupted by thunderstorms that forced a two-hour stoppage of play.

As darkness fell, officials called off play for the day with several golfers still to complete their rounds.

The second round is scheduled to resume at 13:30 GMT on Saturday.

English duo Danny Willett and Matt Wallace were among those left waiting to see if they would make the weekend cut.

Both finished on two-under par, one shot outside the current projected cut line of three-under.
