A serial Tesco shoplifter with more than 250 previous theft-related offences has been jailed for 10 months after committing new crimes while on a suspended sentence.

David Mundy, 35, appeared at Swindon Magistrates Court on Monday where he pleaded guilty to seven counts of theft from shops.

The offender had been given an eight-month suspended sentence just 11 days earlier on January 23 for previous shoplifting offences.

His latest crime spree took place between January 20 and January 30, during which he also assaulted a shopper at a Tesco Express store.

Mundy stole items worth £562.15 from various stores including Tesco, Co-op and One Stop during his latest spree.

The thefts occurred across seven separate incidents, all while he was serving an 18-month suspended sentence.

He also pleaded guilty to criminal damage after causing £100 worth of damage to the doors of Tesco Express in Abbey Meads.

During his crime spree, Mundy pushed a female shopper to the ground while fleeing from security at the Tesco Express in Abbey Meads on January 26.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Prosecutor Keith Ballinger told the court the woman was shopping when Mundy knocked her over while running from store security.

The victim suffered only "a bit of tenderness" from the incident, with no other reported injuries.

In defence, Hillier claimed Mundy had "accidentally collided" with the woman while being pursued by staff members.

The assault charges included both common assault and assault by beating, to which Mundy pleaded guilty.

The court heard that Mundy had been warned on January 23 that any new offences would breach his suspended sentence.

His defence lawyer argued he had "tried to make some positive steps" since receiving the suspended sentence and urged against fully activating it.

Judge Dickins described Mundy as a "prolific shoplifter" and activated his full eight-month suspended sentence.

He received an additional two months for the new theft and assault offences, to be served concurrently, bringing the total sentence to 10 months.

The judge noted it was "quite a lenient sentence bearing in mind your terrible, terrible record" and his continued offending.
