A Met Officer who allegedly tasered a suspect before he fell from a building is due to appear in court over Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) charges.

PC Liam Newman, 30, was chasing a man on foot in Woodford Green, east London, on April 24, 2022, when the suspect climbed onto a “shed structure”.

Newman then allegedly tasered the man, who proceeded to fall from the building.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) subsequently launched an investigation into the incident before they passed the file to Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

The 30-year-old, who is based at Ilford Police station, will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Chief Superintendent Stuart Bell, who leads policing in the area, said: “I am acutely aware of the level of public concern following this incident.

“Our officers understand it is vitally important to maintain public trust and confidence, and that such matters are thoroughly investigated.

“Given criminal proceedings are now active we must now allow the circumstances to be examined in open court.”

The news follows a spate of allegations, sackings and convictions across the Met.

Earlier today, two Metropolitan Police officers were charged with four counts of sexual assault on a woman in London.

Jerome Beasley, 41, and Luke Robinson, 39, allegedly sexually assaulted the woman at a venue in W1 in the west of the capital in April.

The pair - both police constables - were off-duty at the time, the Met said.

Westminster Magistrates' court

They will both appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, police added.

And just three days ago, a tribunal found constable Myles McHugh and two others guilty of gross misconduct for accessing files relating to the murder of Sarah Everard.

The offences took place soon after Everard was kidnapped and killed between March 5 and March 15 in 2021.
