American sports pundit Colin Cowherd has delivered a scathing assessment of Patrick Mahomes' Super Bowl LIX performance, labelling it "the ugliest Super Bowl performance of our lives" following the Kansas City Chiefs' heavy defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The FS1 host's comments on Tuesday's edition of The Herd have sparked debate about Mahomes' legacy and his potential to be considered the NFL's greatest of all time.

The criticism comes after a particularly difficult outing for Mahomes, where he committed three costly turnovers that directly led to Eagles scoring drives.

While the final statistics might appear respectable on paper - 257 yards and three touchdowns - they mask a dire first-half performance from the Chiefs quarterback.

Kansas City managed just 23 yards of total offense in the opening half.

The Chiefs found themselves in a devastating 24-0 hole heading into the third quarter.

Much of Mahomes' statistical production came in the fourth quarter, when the Eagles had already established an insurmountable lead.

Colin Cowherd on Patrick Mahomes: "The ugliest Super Bowl performance arguably of our lives... In a game of inches, Brady is several hundred yards from number two... It's not just that he lost. It's for the second time in a Super Bowl, he was AWFUL."pic.twitter.com/5dxHtSJI2H

The disappointing showing has led many pundits to question Mahomes' ability to perform in the biggest moments, particularly given the pre-match discussions about his potential to challenge for GOAT status.

Cowherd's criticism centred heavily on the stark contrast between Mahomes and Tom Brady's achievements.

"If you cut Tom Brady's career in half and just take the final 12 years, he has four Super Bowls, an MVP, and 54,000 passing yards, which is more than John Elway," Cowherd stated.

He emphasised Brady's dominance with "20 playoff wins just in the second half of his career, which is the most playoff wins of any quarterback of all time."

The pundit also highlighted Brady's superiority in head-to-head matchups, noting he "blew him out in the Super Bowl and beat him in overtime at Arrowhead in the AFC Championship."

While Cowherd's assessment may seem harsh, historical context shows other quarterbacks have had statistically worse Super Bowl outings.

However, as Cowherd notes, Mahomes is being judged by different standards due to his potential GOAT status.

"It's not just losing. Whatever that was leaves a mark," Cowherd concluded.
