Singer Paloma Faith has slammed Britain’s foreign secretary David Lammy as a “traitor” in a series of blistering social media posts.
Lammy took to X, formally Twitter, to congratulate President-Elect Donald Trump after his election victory on Tuesday night.
The foreign secretary joined prime minister Keir Starmer and other world leaders in posting their well wishes to Trump and Vice President-Elect JD Vance.
“The UK has no greater friend than the US, with the special relationship being cherished on both sides of the Atlantic for more than 80 years. We look forward to working with you and JD Vance in the years ahead,” Lammy wrote.
However, his congratulations proved divisive among some, including left-wing news agency Novara Media’s Ash Sarkar.
The editor drew attention to Lammy’s previous social media comments about Trump, made in 2017.
Then-backbencher Lammy described Trump as a “racist KKK and Nazi sympathiser” and declared he would take to the streets to protest the at-the-time President’s UK visit.
“A funny, funny man,” Sarkar quipped, highlighting Lammy’s posts seven years apart.
Faith, 43, added a screenshot of Sarkar’s comment to her Instagram story accompanied by a blistering put-down of the foreign secretary.
“Well done David on being a traitor to your core values,” the singer wrote with the post.
Faith’s comments were part of a torrent of posts in which she expressed her anger at Trump’s victory.
In her first post, The Only Love Can Hurt Like This hit-maker began with a sombre eulogy with plain white text against a black background.
“Oh, great he’s back: goodbye women’s rights, goodbye liberalism, goodbye freedom of speech. Hello racism, hello capitalism, hello climate change, hello war, hello end of days,” Faith wrote.
She also called out London mayor Sadiq Khan after he took a not-so subtle dig at Trump.
Khan assured Londoners the city will always be: “pro-women, pro-diversity, pro-climate and pro-human rights.”
In reference to the congratulations issued by Khan’s fellow Labour leaders, Faith demanded: “Talk to your party about that please!!!!”
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:
Beyond Faith’s searing attack, Lammy’s congratulations to Trump were conversely also challenged for an alleged lack of sincerity.
New leader of the opposition Kemi Badenoch asked if Lammy had apologised for his “derogatory” comments when he met Trump in September.
She added: "If he did not apologise, will the Prime Minister do so now on his behalf?"
Shadow armed forces minister Mark Francois also warned that the foreign secretary faces a “bumpy ride” with the incoming president because of his previous criticism.
The prime minister confirmed he and Lammy’s meeting with Trump had been a "very constructive exercise" but avoided addressing any form of apology.
