The National Lottery has created a record-breaking 383 new millionaires in 2024, making more than one person a millionaire every day throughout the year.

Winners shared a staggering total of £848 million between them in what proved to be a landmark year for the lottery.

The year also marked a significant milestone as the National Lottery reached £50billion raised for good causes since its inception.

An average of 70 high-tier prizes were awarded each month, with 846 prizes worth £50,000 or more claimed by lucky participants across the country.

Builders emerged as the luckiest profession in 2024, followed closely by health service workers.

The year's biggest win came in November when an anonymous ticket-holder claimed a massive £177,033,699.20 EuroMillions jackpot.

This extraordinary windfall made the mystery winner wealthier than pop star Dua Lipa and Michael Buble combined, with their respective fortunes of £104million and £63million.

The jackpot represents the UK's third-biggest National Lottery win ever, falling just behind Joe and Jess Thwaite from Gloucester, who won £184,262,899 in May 2022.

Other substantial anonymous wins in 2024 included a £61million EuroMillions prize at the start of the year, shared with a Spanish ticket-holder, and a £33million jackpot claimed in July.

A factory worker from Canterbury had his life transformed after a simple trip to buy bread turned into a £1million windfall.

Luke Harris, 34, visited his local Co-op store for a loaf but returned home with a winning Merry Millionaire National Lottery scratch card.

"I keep thinking someone is going to take it all away from me and tell me it's a prank," Harris said in November.

Living with his fiancee Alison Coke and their four children, Harris has already purchased a new Nissan X-Trail and is planning their wedding.

The winning number was particularly meaningful - 31 - as the couple had their first date on August 31, 2020.

A police couple in Cambridge initially thought they were being scammed when they discovered their £1 million EuroMillions win.

Graeme White, 35, and wife Katherine, 36, were sceptical when they received a message on the National Lottery app about their winnings.

"Things like this don't happen to people like us, it just couldn't be real," they recalled after their June win.

The couple planned to reduce their working hours to spend more time with their five-year-old daughter and three-year-old son.

Their dreams included taking their children to Disneyland and buying a countryside home complete with a Labrador puppy, chickens and goats.

"As we strolled around B&M absentmindedly the phone rang... the guy on the phone confirmed the win and actually said 'Congratulations, you're a millionaire!'" Graeme said.

A terminally-ill pensioner and his wife found their lives transformed after winning £1 million on the EuroMillions.

Marlyn Anderson, 70, and husband Ian, 77, had been confined to living in their front room in Stirling due to Ian's need for round-the-clock treatment for lung disease.

Mrs Anderson described their home as "like a bedsit" before their March win.

"This win couldn't have come at a better time. It will ensure Ian can have the very best quality of life in the time he has left," Mrs Anderson said.

John Lingard celebrates on Gorleston beach

The couple, married for 32 years, planned to purchase a bungalow where Ian could have his own bedroom and live more comfortably with his condition.

A cancer survivor celebrated a remarkable £500,000 Thunderball win exactly one year after having kidney surgery.

John Lingard, 66, from Great Yarmouth, initially thought his win notification was for just £500.

"Having been through such a challenging time with my cancer diagnosis and treatment, I want to be sure I make the most of every moment," Mr Lingard said.

Single mum Toni Henderson, 32, from Durham, won £1 million in June after initially believing she had won £1,700.

The Cobb family from Peterborough also celebrated after their syndicate, formed at Christmas 1994, won £1 million in July.

"We've had some small wins along the way but I was definitely the favourite big brother when I told my sisters I was giving them each £250,000," said syndicate leader David Cobb.

The year's luckiest lottery number was 11, appearing 16 times in winning combinations, followed by 48, 25, 19 and 3.

Numbers 55, 30 and 46 proved to be the least drawn throughout 2024.

The National Lottery paid out an impressive 846 prizes worth £50,000 or more during the year.

However, not all potential winners were fortunate enough to claim their prizes, as demonstrated by one ticket holder in Rhondda Cynon Taf who missed out on claiming their £1 million prize before the 180-day deadline expired.

The unclaimed prize money was added to the National Lottery's good causes fund, which raises £30million each week.
