Drivers have been warned to expect delays this morning after an earlier collision caused a lorry to crash, blocking a major bridge.

The M20 has been shut between J8 (Hollingbourne) and J9 (Ashford) due to the incident that occurred earlier this morning at roughly 3am.

National Highways officers as well as Kent Police are at the scene with the agency putting height restrictions in place alongside a diversion.

Due to the incident, traffic is currently operating at just 3mph with National Highways aiming to slowly release cars past the scene.

The agency noted that specialist equipment will be required to clear the carriageway of debris caused by the lorry collision which is currently holding up traffic.

Now drivers have been advised to follow the diversion in place eastbound which has a height restriction of 4.7m.

Drivers should exit the M20 at J8 and take the third exit at the roundabout and at the next roundabout take the first exit onto the A20

From here, they should remain on the A20 until the junction with Fougeres Way where they should turn northwards towards J9 of the M20 and rejoin the M20 eastbound at J9.

However, vehicles which exceed the height restriction of 4.7m will be diverted on a different route.

Kent Roads Police shared on X: "The M20 is currently closed coastbound at Junction 8 due to a jackknifed HGV.

"We are working with HighwaysSEAST awaiting clean up and recovery of the vehicle."

The event is expected to clear between 1:45pm and 2pm this afternoon.

A Kent Police spokesperson told GB News: "Kent Police was called at 2.16am on Monday January 13 to a jack-knifed lorry that was causing an obstruction on the M20 between junctions 8 and 9."

The spokesperson added: "Patrols and highways officers attended the scene where the carriageway was closed while the vehicle was recovered. No injuries were reported."
