GB News presenter Eamonn Holmes has hit out against the rise of crime in Sadiq Khan's London branding the city as a "den of thieves."

The Government has said it will tackle the rise in "snatch thefts" on the streets of England and Wales after an estimated 78,000 people, had their phones or bags stolen in the year leading up to March 2024.

Home Office data found that this is more than double the 31,000 incidents of "snatch thefts" in the same period to March 2023.

Speaking on GB News, Holmes explained that while he was walking in central London last week, two police officers told him to be careful as six phones had already been snatched that day and that it is "like an industry."

The Home Office has called on tech companies and manufacturers to a summit in which it will look at "new innovations" to deter criminals.

The Government is also planning to ask police chiefs for more help with the matter launching a probe to gather information on the criminals stealing the phones, and where the devices end up.

Commenting on the crime rate in London, Holmes said: "I do want to say, London is just a den of thieves. It is everywhere you go."

Isabel Webster added: "At least the police were out warning you because there is a sense that actually it's becoming more widespread because frankly there's no law."

Despite a massive rise in street theft, only 0.8 per cent of "theft from the person" led to a charge, according to police intelligence.
