Labour lord Clive Soley has claimed that Kemi Badenoch would pose a greater challenge to the Labour Party than Robert Jenrick in the Conservative leadership race.
Speaking on GB News, Soley stated: "I have to say, if you ask me who would be best for the Labour Party to win this election in the Tory party, it would be Robert Jenrick."
He added that while Jenrick might attract voters back from Reform, he wouldn't win over Labour or Liberal supporters.
Soley praised Badenoch's performance, noting: "I think Kemi Badenoch has clearly got more depth, her answers were much more detailed, much more complex."
The GB News debate between Badenoch and Jenrick highlighted stark differences in their approaches. Jenrick focused heavily on immigration, declaring it "the issue" and advocating for leaving the European Convention on Human Rights.
Badenoch, in contrast, emphasised the need for party renewal, stating: "We are in opposition, so let's use this time wisely."
While Jenrick appeared nervous and relied on prepared lines, Badenoch displayed confidence and frankness, particularly when addressing Brexit-related questions.
The debate also touched on family issues, with both candidates defending their ability to balance leadership roles with parental responsibilities.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS
Audience reactions strongly favoured Badenoch. At the GB News debate, a show of hands immediately after demonstrated an overwhelming majority for her.
The studio audience on GB News' reaction show came to the same conclusion.
Her opening remarks were met with cheers from the crowd.
When asked who had won, those present were mostly in favour of Badenoch.
Soley explained that Badenoch's depth and complexity could make her a formidable opponent for Labour.
He noted: "Now, thing about that is that in a funny sort of way, although she would be much more difficult for the Labour Party, I have to say my experience in politics is that a good Leader of the Opposition tends to make the government of the day better."
The Labour lord suggested that a strong challenger like Badenoch could ultimately improve the performance of the government through robust opposition.
This assessment aligns with the debate performances, where Badenoch's confident and nuanced responses stood in contrast to Jenrick's more focused but less flexible approach.
