Kemi Badenoch is going to "change the party from top to bottom" if elected as Tory leader, MP Julia Lopez has claimed.

Yesterday, Dame Priti Patel was eliminated in the first voting round of the Conservative leadership contest, while Robert Jenrick came top of the ballot.

Speaking to GB News, Lopez said: "Kemi for a start, is not calling it Kemi for leader. She is trying to launch a whole movement to change the party from top to bottom.

"This is something that has to outlast any particular person. There is a huge job to do in renewing our party, and she has set out how she thinks we need to be thinking not just about the problems of today, but the problems of the next decade when there's going to be a general election at the end of the 2020s.

"And we need to think about what are the issues and and ideas that we need to debate ahead of that. Secondly, I think Kemi doesn't shift in the wind. You know what she's about and who she is.

"She doesn't tend to move simply because there's a pressure point. So, you know, she set out in her launch earlier in the week some clear values that she wants to stand behind.

"I think finally, in an electoral sense, I just don't think that Starmer and Farage would know what to do with her. And I think that gives us a really good chance of making this Parliament interesting."
