Former Conservative Minister Edwina Currie compared the new Tory leader Kemi Badenoch to her old boss Margaret Thatcher on GB News.

The comments come as Kemi Badenoch has been elected as the leader of the Conservative party yesterday.

Speaking to Mark Dolan Currie said: "I think she's very good. I must say, when the announcement was made, Mark, I felt quite relieved. I thought, we have somebody who is aware of how economies work, who is aware of how philosophies and cultures work, who's got a very big mind.

"She's lived abroad. She is from a very diverse background. She's extremely clever, lady. My goodness me. I think that she will do extremely well.

"There are parallels. As I'm sure you're aware, Margaret Thatcher was a scientist and Kemi is a computer scientist. Computer engineer.

"Margaret was in opposition as leader for four years, so she had plenty of time to get into the job. And one of the key things there is you have to learn how to take complex ideas and express them in simple terms and elegant terms.

"Margaret became an absolute dab hand at it, and she wasn't right to begin with. So I think, yeah, it's going to be a very interesting time.

"Actually, Kemi is better than Margaret in the House of Commons. She made absolute mincemeat of Angela Rayner during the Queen's Speech debate. It was very, very funny and Angela Rayner had no answer. I can't imagine anybody else could have done as well. So yeah, it's going to be exciting."
