Joe Biden has broken his silence on the US election result and strongly defended his choice of Kamala Harris as his Vice-President.
The President's robust defence came shortly after Harris delivered her concession speech at Howard University, her alma mater, in Washington DC.
In a statement, Biden praised Harris's character and public service record.
"What America saw today was the Kamala Harris I know and deeply admire," the Potus said.
He lauded her as "a tremendous partner and public servant full of integrity, courage and character."
Biden's remarks emphasised his continued support for his VP despite the electoral setback and referred to her as "the best decision I ever made".
Looking forward, Biden expressed confidence in Harris's continued role in public service. "She will continue the fight with purpose, determination, and joy," the President stated.
At Howard University, Harris directly addressed her defeat in a concession speech to supporters.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:
"Earlier today, I spoke with president-elect Trump and congratulated him on his victory," Harris told the crowd, who responded with loud jeers.
The atmosphere was emotional at her final campaign appearance, with many attendees visibly moved to tears.
Harris claimed her "heart is full of gratitude" for the "trust" voters put in her after the election loss.
Reflecting on conceding the election, Harris affirmed that the result is "not what we wanted, fought for and voted for".
She added: "I know folks are feeling a range of emotions right now. But we must accept the results of this election."
Determined to fight on despite her loss, Harris declared: "While I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fuelled this campaign. The fight for freedom, for opportunity, for fairness, and for dignity of all people.
"The fight for the ideals at the heart of our nation. The ideals that reflect America at our best. That is a fight I will never give up."
