A legal pundit has branded Hunter Biden the "least sympathetic defendant of all time" in a scathing criticism of President Joe Biden's decision to pardon his son.

Speaking on GBN America, Katie Cherkasky condemned the move as a "total mockery of justice".

"The idea that this is some sort of warranted gift - I don't think anyone is buying that", she said.

Cherkasky particularly criticised the President's earlier denials about pardoning his son, stating: "Joe Biden vehemently denied he would do this. He denied it all while allowing these trials to proceed at great expense to American taxpayers".

President Biden announced on Sunday that he had signed a pardon for his son Hunter.

"From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department's decision-making, and I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted", he said in a White House statement.

The President defended his decision, adding: "I hope Americans will understand why a father and a President would come to this decision".

Biden made no further comments as he departed for an official trip to Angola.

Hunter Biden was facing two criminal cases at the time of the pardon.

He had pleaded guilty to tax violations and was convicted on federal gun charges.

The President's decision marks a significant reversal from his earlier stance of non-interference with the Justice Department's proceedings.

The pardon comes as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office, with Trump having pledged to pursue his political opposition.

Trump responded to the pardon by questioning whether it would extend to January 6 defendants, calling it "an abuse and miscarriage of Justice!"

The pardon has drawn criticism from both sides of the political aisle.

Democratic Governor of Colorado Jared Polis expressed disappointment, stating: "While as a father I certainly understand President Biden's natural desire to help his son... I am disappointed that he put his family ahead of the country".

Democratic Representative Greg Stanton was equally critical: "This wasn't a politically-motivated prosecution. Hunter committed felonies".

Republican Senator Chuck Grassley tweeted: "I'm shocked Pres Biden pardoned his son Hunter bc he said many many times he wouldn't & I believed him".

James Comer, Republican chair of the House Oversight Committee, called it part of "the Biden Crime Family" corruption.
