A migrant has been convicted after a 12-year-old girl was "passed around like a trophy by more than a dozen boys".
The Austrian schoolgirl - referred to as Mia in local media - was allegedly subjected to horrific sexual abuse by at least 12 migrant boys - some of whom filmed their crimes.
Last March, Austrian police confirmed that they had launched an investigation into 17 individuals on suspicion of sexually abusing the 12-year-old.
The crimes have been said to have taken place in garages, offenders’ flats as well as other places across Vienna.
Those suspected include Austrian, Turkish, Syrian, Italian, Bulgarian and Serbian nationals.
A senior source from the city’s state criminal police force revealed that 12 suspects were between the ages of 14 and 18, while another was aged 19.
Two more were younger than 14 - which is the age of criminal responsibility in Austria - while the identities of two others are currently unknown.
The victim’s Afghan boyfriend, 18, has become the first of the lot to be convicted in the tragic case, who was 15 when the gang rape incident occurred in a hostel in the capital.
Wais S appeared in Vienna Regional Court yesterday and pleaded "partially guilty" to the charges laid against him.

Local paper German newspaper Bild claimed that the suspect knew that Mia was younger than 14 at the time that the sexual abuse took place and had impregnated her.
Pleading "partially guilty", the defendant said: "I thought if she was 12 and I was 15, it was allowed."
Wais further admitted that he blackmailed his girlfriend with footage of the two having sex after the baby was aborted.
An expert analyst studied the defendant’s phone and had come across a social media post on the TikTok account called "ExposingVienna", which shares content about "public shaming" and "revenge porn".
The expert said: "The defendant wrote: 'She gangbanged 15 guys, posts videos, do you want videos, hahahaha?'"
The judge has now sentenced the 18-year-old to 15 months' probation and £670 in damages.
Meanwhile, some of the other suspects have claimed that the 12-year-old had "pretended to be older than 14" and claimed that the sex was consensual.
The police official said that the boys were suspected of serious sexual abuse of a minor, as well as pornographic depiction of a minor.
Last October, a 16-year-old Syrian appeared in court for rape and blackmail charges.
If he had been found guilty, the defendant would have had five years in prison. However, he was acquitted of the rape charges after he insisted that he did not know the girl’s real age, adding that she looked older.
The investigation into the serious sexual abuse remains ongoing.
