Elon Musk "scares the left" and is a "loose cannon apostate" to left-wing Americans, historian Victor Davis Hanson has claimed.

The face of US President Donald Trump's Department of Government Efficiency has sparked controversy with his revamp of the administration, sparking protests and vandalism of his electric Tesla vehicles.

Speaking to GB News, Davis Hanson declared that Musk has done "so much for America", and five years ago he called him the "renaissance guy" - something he still believes today.

Discussing Musk's recent backlash from Democratic supporters across America, Davis Hanson said before Musk's involvement with Trump, it used to be a "badge of honour" to own a Tesla vehicle.

Davis Hanson explained: "He's an apostate. I work in Palo Alto, California, and five years ago it was a badge of honour to have a Tesla. You would brag about it and you could see the chargers had lines of cars and everybody loved Tesla.

"Now they're defacing them or they're taking off the insignia. So he's an apostate - but he's not just an apostate, he is a loud apostate, he is a loose cannon apostate."

Highlighting how people have branded Musk a "traitor", Davis Hanson argued that he is the "richest man in the world for a reason", and has helped "reinvent the electric car industry".

Davis Hanson told GB News: "He's the richest man in the world, but more importantly he's the richest man in the world for a reason.

"He reinvented the entire electric vehicle industry. He saved NASA and Boeing - they can't do anything, it seems he's got to rescue them. If he pulled free Starlink internet from Ukraine or from Los Angeles right now, they'd be in big trouble."

Discussing Musk's influence on social media, Davis Hanson claimed that his power on X and other platforms as a "free-for-all" is what "scares the left" the most.

Davis Hanson said: "X is what they really hate him for, because now it's a free-for-all social media, and more importantly it's infectious. So Meta, Facebook, Snapchat they're all following that way of opening it up.

"So he's very powerful. And besides being rich, he's very outspoken and he's very volatile - he's a loose cannon and he scares them, he really does."

Heaping praise on Musk, Davis Hanson recalled how five years ago, he branded the Tesla CEO as the "renaissance guy", and believes Musk still has a huge influence on the world.

Davis Hanson concluded: "He's done more for America than... even when he was leftwing, I wrote very favourably that he's a renaissance guy. I can't think of anybody who has reinvented the space industry, the electric vehicle, and created the social media.

"I live out here in the middle of nowhere in rural America, and we wouldn't be having this conversation right now if it wasn't for Starlink. All the other local internet servers wouldn't have the bandwidth, and yet he he did it for $120 a month."
