A major energy supplier is offering customers free electricity on three Sundays in April as part of its Sunday Saver challenges.

EDF customers can earn free electricity by shifting their usage away from peak hours during weekdays.

The offer is available to thousands of customers, but they must sign up between now and April 6.

The challenge officially begins on April 7, giving households the opportunity to reduce their energy costs during a time when many bills are rising.

To earn free electricity, customers need to move their usage away from the weekday peak hours of 4pm to 7pm.

The more electricity shifted away from these hours, the more free hours customers can earn, with between four and 16 hours available.

For example, shifting 50 per cent of peak usage could earn up to 16 free hours to use the following Sunday.

Simple changes like not running dishwashers or washing machines during peak times can help.

Batch cooking food at weekends to reheat during the week is another suggested approach.

Any free electricity earned will be added as credit to customers' accounts.

To be eligible for the scheme, customers must have a smart meter that sends readings every 30 minutes or be able to set it up for 30-minute reads.

Adjusting meter settings is straightforward through the EDF MyAccount portal at edfenergy.com/myaccount/login.

Customers need to go to the "About Me" section, select "Smart Meter Preferences," and choose the half-hourly option.

To join the challenge, customers should visit the Energy Hub in their MyAccount and sign up.

Participants can track how much free electricity they've earned each week in the Energy Hub and see which Sunday they can use it.

EDF's Sunday Saver challenges have already proven popular with customers.

More than 91,000 EDF customers participated in the March savings challenge.

Together, they earned over 1,000,000 free hours of electricity.

This collective effort resulted in savings of more than £200,000 on their energy bills.

The April challenge builds on this success, offering another opportunity for customers to reduce costs.

With energy bills set to rise from £1,738 to £1,849 a year for the average household on variable tariffs, such initiatives are particularly timely.

EDF is not the only supplier offering electricity savings schemes.

E.ON Next gives customers free electricity on every bank holiday until March 2026, potentially saving households £28 over a year.

Ovo Energy's Power Move offers chances to win up to £2,000 of free energy for using 85% or more of energy at off-peak times.

Scottish Power's Power Saver scheme provides half-price electricity between 11am and 4pm every weekend.

Octopus Energy customers can participate in free electricity sessions when wholesale prices fall below zero, receiving credits for extra usage.
