A 53-year-old man has been jailed for nearly four years after attacking his neighbour with a sword when offered a cigarette.

Philip Beff swung an unsheathed sword at his neighbour's head following a day of drinking together, causing severe injuries to the victim's hand and ear.

The incident occurred when the neighbour knocked on Beff's door at 1.30am to invite him for a cigarette, to which Beff responded aggressively before launching the attack.

The day began when Beff called on his neighbour at 3pm, inviting him out for a drink and offering to pay when the neighbour mentioned having limited funds.

The pair spent the afternoon drinking together before returning home at 6pm.

They later resumed their drinking session at 8pm, continuing until both men returned to their homes at 1.30am.

The neighbour then decided to have a cigarette and knocked on Beff's door to invite him to join.

When Beff answered the door, he grabbed an unsheathed sword that was near his entrance and swung it forcefully at the man's head.

The victim raised his hands to protect himself, resulting in the sword cutting deep into his hand and striking his ear.

The attack ended when the victim managed to grab Beff and pull him to the ground, after which they were separated.

The sword had severed tendons in the man's hand during the violent assault.

The victim required surgery to repair the severed tendons in his hand and needed stitches to his ear, leaving him with permanent visible scarring.

Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court

The court heard that the victim had "never experienced such pain" from the attack.

He now suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, panic attacks and flashbacks as a result of the incident.

Beff, of Belle Vue Road, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and was sentenced to three years and 11 months in prison.

Recorder Robert Smith imposed a 10-year restraining order, prohibiting Beff from contacting his victim or visiting Belle Vue Road, Leek.

"What you did was to act drunkenly and in temper. It was unprovoked. He did not deserve what happened to him," said Recorder Smith.
