Dramatic footage has emerged showing the moment police officers rushed towards the deadly terror attack in New Orleans' French Quarter.

Nine officers can be seen standing on a corner before suddenly sprinting towards the unfolding incident.

One officer is seen checking his mobile phone moments before the group breaks into a run, appearing to be the instant they received news of the attack.

The video captures crowds of people in the area, who merely turn to look in the direction where the officers are heading.

The officers were responding to what would become a devastating attack on the city's famed Bourbon Street, which the FBI is now investigating as an act of terrorism.

A total of 15 people were killed and 35 others injured after a truck was deliberately driven into New Year's crowds on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

The horrific incident unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday morning in the city's historic French Quarter.

The FBI has confirmed they are treating the incident as an act of terrorism.

The attack turned the popular tourist destination into a scene of carnage as revellers hoped to celebrate the New Year.

Local law enforcement engaged in a deadly confrontation with the attacker after he exited his vehicle and opened fire on officers.

Two police officers were wounded in the exchange and were transported to a local hospital.

The suspect has been identified as Shamsud Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old US citizen from Texas.

The attack occurred at approximately 3.15 am local time when Jabbar allegedly drove a rented Ford pickup truck into crowds of New Year's revellers.

After ramming into the crowd, Jabbar left his vehicle and began shooting at police officers.

Law enforcement returned fire, resulting in the suspect being pronounced dead at the scene.

The FBI confirmed the pickup truck appeared to be a rental vehicle, and investigators are working to determine how Jabbar obtained possession of it.

The deadly rampage prompted an immediate response from law enforcement, leading to a swift but violent conclusion in the heart of the French Quarter.

The FBI discovered an ISIS flag inside the suspect's vehicle, along with weapons and what appeared to be an improvised explosive device (IED).

Additional potential IEDs were found throughout the French Quarter, prompting immediate action from authorities.

The FBI's special agent bomb technicians are working alongside other law enforcement agencies to assess and safely handle any viable explosive devices.

"The FBI's special agent bomb technicians are working with our law enforcement partners to determine if any of these devices are viable, and they will work to render those devices safe," the agency said in a statement.

The discovery of the ISIS flag has led investigators to examine possible connections between the suspect and terrorist organisations.

The presence of multiple weapons and explosive devices has heightened concerns about the scale of the planned attack.

The FBI has confirmed it is leading the investigation into the New Year's Day attack.

"The FBI is the lead investigative agency, and we are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism," the agency stated.

Investigators are actively pursuing all potential leads to identify any possible associates of Jabbar.

The agency emphasised its aggressive approach to the investigation, working to uncover any broader connections to the attack.

"We are aggressively running down all leads to identify any possible associates of the subject," the FBI statement concluded.
