Donald Trump has been backed to take back a crucial swing state from the Democrats as Americans head to the polls.

Republican former Arizona Congressman Trent Franks, who served in the US House of Representatives for almost 15 years, warned GB News his state is on a knife-edge, but said Trump has an "excellent chance".

Asked what the situation was like on the ground in Arizona - and whether Trump could snap up its 11 Electoral College votes - Franks said: "I think he has an excellent chance this Tuesday. I believe he's going to win.

"But I don't know... Perhaps some of that is very strong hope - it looks so close here."

Trump has seen off multiple attempts on his life on the campaign trail - and when asked whether those had elevated him in the eyes of Americans, Franks agreed.

He said: "It would be a profound irony if he barely survived an assassination attempt in the state of Pennsylvania and then barely survived his election in Pennsylvania.

"If he wins Pennsylvania, I think he wins the presidency. I think it shows the courage of the man - when a man gets up after being nearly killed and punches his fist in the air and says: 'Freedom,' there's something that appeals and resonates in the hearts of all of us."

Franks also told GB News what Trump was like in person - and though he conceded the 45th President may not have been "perfect", the former Congressman issued a dire warning over the alternative: Kamala Harris taking power.

"I'd be the first to say that sometimes he has the the diplomacy of a World War II torpedo," he said. "If you look at the man's policies - and that's the thing we all have to keep in mind when we elect someone - Jesus is not on the ballot.

"We don't have a perfect candidate in any situation, but we're not electing a personality or a person. We're electing principles and policies.

"You folks haven't revoked our Declaration of Independence yet - for which I'm grateful.

"But the profound truth is America is the is the flagship of freedom in the world, and there are certain principles that have given us that opportunity.

Kamala Harris

"If we walk away from those principles, then it's a bad thing for the whole world.

"And if we elect Kamala Harris to the presidency, we are walking away from the most foundational principles of the Republic and of this country."

Alongside the warnings over Harris, Franks also took a swipe at what he sees as the Democrat-run US media.

He told GB News: "I served in Congress when Donald Trump was President - so I'm one of those conservatives who truly believes that the left-wing media here is more or less part of the Democrat Party.

"I am concerned about what you all get [to see of Trump] in Europe - It may not be the honest reality!

"I know Donald Trump very well and I realise he doesn't speak much 'diplomat' - but he is a very different person when you sit down and talk with him, as compared to how he's sometimes presented in the media."

Regardless of how the former - and potential next - President comes across, Franks thinks November 5 is his to win.

He said: "I think Trump is going to get between 280 and 300 electoral votes - and that is a hope as much as it is a prediction.

"But we are grateful in America for England for what you guys mean to all of us - and we appreciate you giving us our start.

"We pray that somehow we can be partners and go forward and fight for the life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness!"
