Donald Trump has vowed to “fix everything” that is “broken” in America as he declared victory in the US election.

Trump, 78, took to the stage in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he was met with adulation from a celebratory crowd.

“We have thousands of friends in this incredible movement. This was a movement like nobody has seen before”, he said.

“Frankly, I think this is the greatest political movement of all time. There has never been anything like this in this country.

“It needs help and it needs it badly. We’re going to fix our borders, we’re going to fix everything about our country.

“We made history tonight and the reason is we overcame obstacles that nobody thought possible. It is now clear we have achieved the most incredible political feat.”

Trump claimed victory in the presidential contest over Democrat Kamala Harris, with some US networks projecting the result.

“America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate”, he said, as he claimed victory in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

The Harris camp revealed she would not be speaking to her supporters as Trump edged closer to victory.

Her campaign co-chair, Cedric Richmond, briefly addressed the crowd after midnight, saying Harris would speak publicly on Wednesday.

"We still have votes to count," he said.

Trump was making gains in every corner of the country as he delivered his speech with the Republican earning a bigger share of the vote than he did four years ago.

The increased support reflected a broad shift in Americans’ support for the president they ousted four years ago.

Trump voted earlier near his home in Palm Beach, Florida.

"If I lose an election, if it's a fair election, I'm gonna be the first one to acknowledge it," Trump told reporters.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a prominent Trump backer, watched the results at Mar-a-Lago with Trump.
