Donald Trump has been hailed as the "grandfather of the nation" after banning transgender athletes in a move branded "common sense" by many of his supporters.

The US President signed an executive order titled "Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports" on National Girls and Women in Sports Day, surrounded by female athletes and supporters.

During the signing ceremony, which took place on the 39th annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day, Trump declared that "the war on women's sports is over".

Discussing the ban on GB News, US Journalist Nelson Aspen claimed that the decision will become an "indelible part of the Trump presidency".

Aspen told the People's Channel: "So President Trump, deeming it a matter of common sense, signed this executive order, effectively banning transsexuals from women's sports - no men in women's sports.

"He claims that's common sense, and federal funding can now be withheld from any organisations who do not comply."

Noting how quickly organisations have responded to the ban, he added: "Interestingly, almost immediately coming to the table was the National Collegiate Athletic Association, who have officially endorsed the ban, followed the ban, and that's what's going on.

"With the sweep of his executive pen, Trump enacted the executive order surrounded by young female athletes, young women and young girls. It was one of those amazing photo ops that will become an indelible part of the Trump presidency, right up there with him serving French fries or driving the garbage truck."

Praising the President, Aspen hailed the US leader as the "grandfather of the nation" and that the decision has left his opponents "scrambling".

Aspen said: "He was seeming very much like the grandfather of the nation, surrounded by these young people, very enthusiastically pleased with his decision.

"Trump's opponents, whether that's just the voters or his political opponents, are just losing their minds at the moment because of the speed with which he is enacting change. So every day they are scrambling to keep up, to counter it, to block it in the courts."

On the issue as a whole, Aspen detailed how the formerly "small problem" became a "big headline" for the US, following concerns from young women in sport.

Aspen explained: "This became a small problem that became a huge headline, by the involvement of having transgender participants in female sports.

"Some females were getting injured. Some females were upset about the presence of transgender individuals in the locker rooms with them.

"But what's going to be interesting to see is how it goes over with the Olympics. How will this affect Olympic participation for men in women's sports?"

Trump has framed the measure as essential for protecting fairness in female athletics, comparing it to his previous efforts to remove what he called "woke lunacy" from the military.

The directive will penalise schools and athletic associations that permit trans athletes to participate in female categories.
