Channing Tatum has revealed the dramatic physical transformations he underwent for two upcoming films, sharing a series of shirtless selfies on Instagram that showcase his significant weight fluctuations.
The 44-year-old actor posted three photos displaying his body at different weights, demonstrating the extreme changes he made for his roles in the films Josephine and Roofman.
The Magic Mike star's post has garnered attention not only for the remarkable physical changes but also for his candid declaration that he will no longer take on roles requiring substantial weight gain.
Tatum's weight varied by more than 60lbs between the two film projects, ranging from 235lbs to 172lbs.
In the first photo, Tatum revealed his current weight of 205lbs, showing a physique closer to what fans typically associate with the actor.
The second image displayed him at 235lbs for the upcoming thriller "Josephine," in which he stars alongside Gemma Chan and Philip Ettinger.
The film, currently in post-production, is described by producer David Kaplan as "a story of a family dealing with a personal trauma after seeing something unexpected and horrifying in Golden Gate Park."
The third photo showed a dramatically leaner Tatum at just 172lbs for Roofman, a crime drama based on the true story of Jeffrey Manchester, a former Army Ranger who robbed McDonald's restaurants by cutting holes in their roofs.
Roofman is scheduled for release on October 3, 2025.
Alongside the striking images, Tatum made a firm declaration about his future career choices, writing: "I won't be doing anymore fat roles."
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:
He explained his decision by citing the physical toll these transformations take, stating: "It's too hard on the body and too hard to take off now."
Despite swearing off such dramatic weight changes, the actor expressed amazement at his body's capabilities.
"When I look at these pics it's just wild what the human body and will can do," he wrote in his Instagram caption.
The post has resonated with fans and fellow celebrities alike, with stars including Padma Lakshmi, Laverne Cox and Natasha Lyonne commenting on his transformation.
In his post, Tatum expressed profound gratitude to the team who helped him achieve these dramatic physical transformations.
"I'm so grateful for my genetics. Grateful for my chef/nutritionist/witch. Grateful for my trainer," he wrote.
The actor acknowledged he "couldn't make these big swings in my weight without you guys."
Some followers compared his transformations to those of Christian Bale, who has similarly undergone extreme weight fluctuations for roles.
Bale previously spoke about the toll such changes take on the body, noting that rapid weight gain is "not very healthy" and can cause "big mood swings."
Tatum filmed Josephine in mid-2024 before dropping over 60lbs for Roofman later that year.
This is not the first time Tatum has spoken about the challenges of maintaining extreme physiques for film roles.
During a 2022 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, he questioned how people with regular jobs manage to stay in shape.
"I don't know how people that work a nine to five actually stay in shape because it's my full time job and I can barely do it," he said.
Regarding his preparation for the Magic Mike films, Tatum previously admitted the process was "not even healthy."
"Even if you do work out, to be that kind of in shape is not natural. You have to starve yourself," he explained.
The physical demands nearly caused him to skip Magic Mike's Last Dance, released in 2023.
