Brittany Mahomes has faced intense social media criticism after posting a series of Instagram photos during the Super Bowl, where the Kansas City Chiefs suffered a 40-22 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans.

The wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes shared sideline pictures on the social media site during the match, sporting a £73,000 VRAI diamond necklace alongside a white ensemble.

Her post, simply captioned "LIX", was met with immediate backlash as the Chiefs' hopes of securing a historic third consecutive Super Bowl victory slipped away.

The timing of her social media update particularly irked fans, who flooded the comments section with criticism just minutes after the final whistle.

The carousel of Instagram photos included images of her children, four-year-old daughter Sterling and two-year-old son Bronze, alongside her sideline poses.

Social media users were quick to criticise the poorly-timed post, with one fan simply hitting out at the 29-year-old: "So self-absorbed."

"This is what you are posting when the team is down 24-0 at halftime?" a second critic hit out as they raged at the timing of her social media update.

"Not now, Brittany," a third echoed before a fourth mocked: "She should of stayed quiet ..."

"The comments will be turned off soon," a fifth harshly predicted before a sixth took aim at the former soccer player's post: "In front of the camera AGAIN," followed by a puking emoji.

However, others did rush to support Mahomes in light of the backlash to her post, including one fan who praised: "Beautiful mama! We are still proud of our Chiefs no matter what!"

And another weighed in: "Love the outfit. Still a Chiefs fan for life but that was hard." (sic)

Mahomes was far from the only big name to face criticism during Sunday's game in New Orleans as fellow Chiefs WAG Taylor Swift also found herself in the firing line.

The Shake It Off hitmaker and girlfriend to the Chiefs' Travis Kelce was met by a chorus of boos when she appeared on the big screen inside the stadium.

Swift appeared dumbfounded by the reaction. She turned to a pal to ask what was going on as she listened to the disapproving sound.

Elsewhere, President Donald Trump made history on Sunday as the first sitting US President to attend a Super Bowl, where he predicted a Chiefs victory before the match.

Speaking to Fox News' Bret Baier, Trump said: "I guess you have to say that when a quarterback wins as much as he's won – I have to go with Kansas City."

The president also offered particular praise for Mahomes, describing her as "phenomenal" and "a Trump fan."

"She's a mega-fan, so I happen to love her," Trump claimed. "I watched her being interviewed, I said it's pretty good, but she's great and he's great."

Despite Trump's prediction and support for the Mahomes family, the Eagles emerged victorious in New Orleans, dashing Kansas City's hopes of a third consecutive Super Bowl title.
