Spain continues to be the top destination for British expat homebuyers, offering the greatest choice of homes in the current market.

The country tops the table for foreign properties marketed specifically to British buyers, according to research by eXp UK.

Nearly 300,000 Britons were residing in Spain last year, making it one of the largest British expat communities globally after Australia, the US and Canada.

This popularity shows no signs of waning, with thousands of properties available across various Spanish regions. However, potential tax changes could soon alter this landscape for British buyers seeking their place in the Spanish sun.

Andalucia provides the greatest choice of homes for British expats, with 28,211 properties currently listed for sale, the experts reported. The Costa del Sol ranks second, offering almost 25,000 homes on the market.

Costa Blanca comes in third place with just under 13,000 properties available to British buyers. These three Spanish regions dominate the international property market for Britons looking to relocate abroad.

The concentration of available properties reflects the enduring appeal of Spain's Mediterranean coast, with its warm climate and established expat communities.

For many Britons, these areas represent the ideal combination of affordability, lifestyle and accessibility from the UK. However, this Spanish property paradise for Britons faces an uncertain future.

The Spanish government recently announced it is considering a 100 per cent tax hike for non-EU homebuyers.

If implemented, such a dramatic increase would likely end British dreams of owning a Spanish home.

The proposal represents a significant shift in Spain's approach to foreign property ownership. For the thousands of Britons currently considering a Spanish property purchase, this development adds considerable uncertainty to their plans, however, it still proves popular with expats.

The good news for British buyers put off by this is that alternatives to Spain exist. Portugal's Algarve region ranks within the top five destinations for British expat homebuyers.

Dubai also features prominently in the top five locations. Other popular areas making the top 10 include Provence and the French Riviera in France.

The Balearic Islands and Costa Calida in Spain also remain attractive options. Tuscany in Italy rounds out the top 10 destinations.

With Spain's potential tax changes looming, these alternative locations may see increased interest from British property hunters.

Head of eXp UK Adam Day commented: "We're a nation that's obsessed with homeownership and this obsession isn't restricted to the green and pleasant lands of Britain alone, with some 79,000 Britons choosing to emigrate last year.

"Spain has long been a firm favourite in this respect and whilst that certainly remains the case today, it's fair to say we're broadening our horizons, with the likes of Dubai becoming particularly popular."
