A 13-year-old boy has died in what police are calling a "tragic incident" at a primary school in South Wales.

The death occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning at Melin Primary School, Neath, sparking an urgent police investigation.



The school's infant and junior sites were immediately closed following the death - which police said is not being treated as suspicious.

South Wales Police has also confirmed that the Coroner has been notified.

Meanwhile, Neath Port Talbot Council voiced its deep sadness over the tragic news - and pledged to offer any possible assistance to the police investigation.

The school was closed throughout yesterday following the incident.

Melin Primary School reopened today, with both of its sites resuming operations.

The council has also announced that support will be made available to anyone affected by the tragedy.

Acting headteacher Danielle Harris addressed parents and guardians in a letter ahead of the school's reopening.

She wrote: "We want to inform you that Melin Primary School (infant and junior sites) will reopen tomorrow (Thursday January 30) following a tragic incident that occurred on the school grounds in the early hours of this morning.

"We understand that recent events have been distressing, and we want to assure you that the wellbeing of our students, staff and wider school community remains our top priority.

"Support services will be available at the school to assist anyone in need.



"If your child requires additional support please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

"We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this difficult time."

The boy's next-of-kin have been informed of his death, police said.
