Joe Biden has been slammed as the "singular reason" Kamala Harris lost the US election, with the Democrats turning on the gaffe-filled President.

The devastating election defeat has led to immediate finger-pointing within the Democratic Party, with Biden, 81, becoming the primary target of criticism.

"We ran the best campaign we could, considering Joe Biden was president," a Harris aide told Politico in a stark assessment of the situation.

The blame game has intensified as party members grapple with their seismic loss, with many suggesting Harris wasn't given adequate time to win over voters due to Biden's prolonged attempts to maintain his nomination.

Throughout the campaign trail, Biden's age and public mishaps became a significant concern for voters.

At 81 years old, he holds the record as America's oldest president, with his cognitive abilities repeatedly called into question.

He confused Ukrainian and Russian leaders during public appearances and even mistook Vice President Harris for Donald Trump.

Several concerning incidents saw the President freeze on stage, appear disoriented, and in one instance walk off alone into the distance.

These episodes sparked growing unease both within the Democratic Party and among the general public.

Biden ultimately withdrew from the race following an underwhelming debate performance against Trump, handing the reins to Harris.

Biden's declining popularity continued to hamper Harris's campaign even after his withdrawal from the race.

In a particularly damaging incident, he was photographed wearing a MAGA hat at a public event.

He further alienated potential swing voters by labelling all Trump supporters as "garbage".

These missteps led Democrats to increasingly distance themselves from the 46th President.

The series of public blunders and controversial statements left Harris fighting an uphill battle to regain voter confidence.

However, Dr Alan Mendoza, executive director of think tank Henry Jackson Society, warned against using Biden as a scapegoat.

Donald Trump

"Biden's an easy scapegoat, but I think it'd be a foolish one because the Democrats lost for more than just Joe Biden," he told The Sun.

"They lost because they hadn't delivered for over four years and that's not necessarily Biden's fault."

He cautioned that moving away from Biden could backfire on the party.

"The worst thing Democrats could do from their perspective would be to blame Biden, and then pivot to the left," Mendoza added.

Mendoza also suggested Biden might feel vindicated by Harris's defeat, noting: "I think he's still annoyed he wasn't the candidate."
