At least one person has died and over 60 people injured after a vehicle crashed into crowd at a Christmas market.
Local media reports that emergency services are in attendance at the market in Magdeburg.
According to initial findings, a car is said to have driven into the crowd at the Christmas market. Several people are reported to have been injured.
Local media reports police have arrested a driver who crashed into a Christmas market in the central German city.
Bild reports local police are searching the cordoned-off area of the Christmas market for explosives. Tents have been set up in the area to treat the injured with tram services suspended throughout the city.
According to eyewitness reports, the incident began at 7.04pm local time when a dark BMW is said to have raced into the crowd. The emergency services in Magdeburg reported that between 60 and 80 people were injured in the attack.
Eyewitnesses told local media the vehicle "drove into the fairy tale area of the Magdeburg Christmas market"where there were a lot of families. The suspected driver of the car has been arrested, broadcaster MDR and other local media are reporting.
The Magdeburg Christmas market is warning people on Instagram to leave the area. A spokesman said: "Due to current events, we would like to point out that you should avoid the Christmas market. Please let the emergency services do their job and leave the market in an orderly manner!"
A message was displayed on video wall in the stadium about the latest news during the match between Fortuna Düsseldorf and 1. FC Magdeburg.
Players from FC Magdeburg stood together with their fans after the match in the German second division.
Saxony-Anhalt's Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff said: "This is a terrible event, especially now in the days before Christmas."
Public broadcaster MDR also cited a spokesman for the state government describing the incident as an attack. Several people were "severely” injured", a spokesman told AFP.
A police spokesman told German media the car drove "at least 400 meters across the Christmas market" into the crowd and is still at the scene.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz wrote on social media: "The reports from Magdeburg suggest something terrible is to come. My thoughts are with the victims and their families.
"We stand by their side and by the side of the people of Magdeburg. My thanks go to the dedicated rescue workers in these anxious hours."
