Asda has launched a nationwide coffee pod recycling scheme in partnership with Podback, allowing customers to recycle their used pods at more than 600 stores across the UK.
The free service enables shoppers to return both aluminium and plastic coffee pods through Asda's toYou parcel service, offering a convenient solution for environmentally conscious coffee drinkers.
Coffee pods require specialised recycling due to their small size and organic content, making them unsuitable for traditional recycling methods.
Customers can participate by ordering Podback bags from www.podback.org, filling them with their used coffee pods, and returning them to participating Asda stores through the toYou service.
The initiative was originally established by Nestle and Jacobs Douwe Egberts in 2021 to simplify pod recycling across the UK.
Through the Podback recycling scheme, both plastic and aluminium pods are processed within the UK.
The coffee grounds are converted into renewable energy and soil improver through anaerobic digestion.
The recovered aluminium and plastic materials from the pods are repurposed into various products, including drinks cans, building materials and garden furniture.
Senior manager of healthy and sustainable choices at Asda Beth Fowler said: "We're always looking for ways to support customers to make sustainable choices when shopping with us.
"The partnership with Podback is one of many workstreams across Asda's ESG strategy including broader commitments on packaging reduction, recyclability and recycled content.
"By offering the collection and recycling service with Asda toYou and Podback, we hope that we can make recycling more convenient than ever when shopping with Asda."
Executive director at Podback Rick Hindley added: "Our partnership with Asda marks an exciting step forward in Podback's mission to make sure every coffee pod enjoyed is recycled.
