Ecuador will close all land borders for three days during its upcoming presidential elections, as the country implements heightened security measures across the nation.

Border crossings in the South American destination will be closed from February 8 to February 10 inclusive, with the presidential elections scheduled for February 9.

In its latest travel advice, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) told British holidaymakers in Ecuador to "expect heightened police and military presence nationwide".

They were also made aware of "potential travel disruptions due to extra security checks".

The border closure will affect all of Ecuador's land crossings during the three-day period.

At this time, travellers should follow instructions from police and local authorities.

The heightened security measures surrounding the presidential elections coincide with Ecuador's ongoing state of emergency.

The state of emergency, which was renewed for 60 days on January 2, 2025, was implemented due to "internal disturbance and armed violence" in the country.

Its renewal has granted authorities additional powers to maintain order during this period of unrest.

The FCDO emphasised the importance of following instructions from police and local authorities during the state of emergency.

For the full list of provinces where the state of emergency applies, plus the districts and parishes placed under a "curfew", Britons should consult the FCDO's latest guidance.

The FCDO has also issued specific travel warnings for several regions within Ecuador, with the UK Government "advising against all but essential travel" to some locations.

Ecuador is known for the enchanting Galápagos Islands and Amazon rainforest, incredible biodiversity and culinary marvels.

However, before visiting, it is important to be aware of specific regional risks. Restricted areas include coastal regions and the province of Guayas.

Additionally, the FCDO warned against non-essential travel within 20 kilometres of Ecuador's border with Colombia.

These travel advisories remain in effect alongside the temporary border closures and state of emergency measures.

Britons planning a visit to Ecuador should carefully consider their destinations within the country, paying particular attention to these specified regions.

Before going abroad, it's important to consult the FCDO's latest guidance for your chosen destination. This will include the most up-to-date information on warnings and insurance, entry requirements, safety and security, regional risks; health and getting help.
