Aldi has partnered with The Hidden Sea to launch a new own-label Chardonnay that helps remove plastic from the world's oceans.

The Kooliburra Hidden Sea Chardonnay, priced at £7.49, is now available in Aldi stores across the UK.

For every bottle purchased, the equivalent of 10 plastic bottles will be removed from the ocean through the ReSea Project's clean-up initiatives.

The supermarket has become the first in the UK to collaborate with The Hidden Sea on an own-label wine.

The Hidden Sea works alongside ReSea Project, its global ocean health partner, to fund extensive ocean clean-up operations.

The initiative forms part of The Hidden Sea's ongoing commitment to ocean conservation through its wine sales.

The partnership enables Aldi customers to directly contribute to marine conservation efforts through their wine purchases.

Since its UK launch in 2021 through distributor Kingsland Drinks, The Hidden Sea has established itself as a leader in combining wine retail with environmental action.

National sustainability director at Aldi UK Liz Fox said: "We know our customers want to shop more sustainably, which is why we're pleased to be launching this unique wine that will support ongoing industry action to reduce ocean plastic."

Justin Moran, co-founder of The Hidden Sea, added: "We are excited to collaborate with Aldi on this initiative, helping its customers champion ocean conservation by choosing our Chardonnay. Each bottle purchased will play a crucial role in funding cleanup projects that remove plastic waste from our oceans, helping to restore marine ecosystems."

The Hidden Sea has already made significant progress in ocean conservation, removing the equivalent of 31 million plastic bottles from the world's oceans through its global wine sales.

Aldi has demonstrated previous commitment to sustainable packaging, launching the UK's first supermarket own-brand paper wine bottles last year.

The retailer also introduced innovative eco-flat plastic bottles, which earned gold for Sustainability Pack of the Year at The Grocer's New Product & Packaging Awards 2024.

These initiatives have reduced emissions in both packaging manufacturing and transportation compared to traditional glass bottles.

Senior brand manager at Kingsland Drinks Pete Fairclough said: "The partnership with Aldi's much-loved Kooliburra brand means that even more shoppers can get to know Hidden Sea and join the mission to rid the world's oceans of plastic.

"We all need to be part of the solution to plastic pollution if we want to live in a world fit to pass onto future generations. The partnership with Aldi means more consumers can join Hidden Sea in its goal."
