King Charles's recent hospital admission should be seen as "a bump in the road" rather than a serious decline in his health, according to GB News royal correspondent Cameron Walker.

The monarch was admitted to hospital earlier today after experiencing side effects connected to his cancer treatment.

Cameron explained that while side effects from cancer treatment are not uncommon, this appears to be "the first time that His Majesty has had to cancel engagements due to a reaction of this severity".

Buckingham Palace confirmed the King was discharged following "a short period of observation" but has been forced to cancel a series of engagements.

The palace said in a statement: "Following scheduled and ongoing medical treatment for cancer this morning, The King experienced temporary side effects that required a short period of observation in hospital."

"His Majesty's afternoon engagements were therefore postponed."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

GB News royal correspondent Cameron Walker said: "Of course, this news comes as a bit of a surprise.

"We understood that the King was undergoing a weekly schedule of cancer treatment while carrying out a very full program of public engagements, but clearly, this has had to stop for the time being at least.

"The situation appears serious enough that His Majesty had to be taken from his private residence at Clarence House to the hospital for a period of observation, as they describe it.

"Not only that, Patrick, but all of his engagements tomorrow, which were scheduled to be in Birmingham, have been cancelled as well.

"Now, I was with the Prince of Wales today in Aberdeen, and he didn’t cancel his engagement, and Her Majesty the Queen didn’t cancel hers either, which suggests that there was no immediate cause for alarm when it came to His Majesty's health.

"I understand that, of course, there are side effects from the cancer treatments he is undergoing, and it's not uncommon for people experiencing such treatments to face these kinds of challenges.

"However, this appears to be the first time that His Majesty has had to cancel engagements due to a reaction of this severity.

"I understand that the Queen did not join the King in hospital, and it was a London clinic that he was taken to.

"This suggests that it wasn’t an emergency, as it wasn’t an accident and emergency NHS department, indicating that the situation wasn’t urgent and he didn't need to be rushed to the hospital.

"What I’m hearing from my sources inside Buckingham Palace is that this should be seen as a note of caution, just a bump in the road, rather than a serious decline in his health.

"But having said that, Patrick, he is still undergoing a weekly cycle of cancer treatment.

"Over the last six months or so, he has been incredibly busy, with trips to Australia and Samoa, and carrying out numerous engagements each day. I think this will serve as a reminder to everyone that the King is still undergoing cancer treatment, and it's clear that his road to recovery is not without its challenges."
