A retired County Durham miner has received the news that he will now receive Pension Credit, after featuring on GB News back in October.

Billie Pounder who voted for Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour Party at the last election says he was recently given the good news by the Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) and could possibly now qualify for the Winter Fuel Allowance as a result.

Speaking to GB News, Pounder said: “When the DWP lady visited me she said that my appearance on the channel ‘caused a bit of a landslide’.”

Pounder expressed his gratitude to GB News for the support that the People’s Channel has provided, and for highlighting the Winter Fuel Allowance issue impacting him and millions of other pensioners.

He said: “GB News have been amazing, and lots of people have taken notice.

“It’s done me good and will do others some good too.”

He added: “You’ve [GB News] done brilliant.”

This comes after the Prime Minister and Chancellor Rachel Reeves axed the Winter Fuel Payment from ten million British pensioners, something Labour’s own 2017 research suggested could lead to the death of 4,000 OAPs.

Since the Chancellor made the winter fuel announcement in July last year, there has been an increase in claims for Pension Credit, seeing the number of claims increase from an average of 4,000 per week to 9,500 claims per week according to figures published by the (DWP).

Despite the increase in claims, concerns have been raised that some pensioners will struggle with using the online pension credit calculator, completing the relevant paperwork and speaking to advisors.

Hitting out at the Prime Minister, Pounder said: “He’s [Starmer] is ruining the country, he will help anyone but us.”

Experts have warned that the decision to cancel Winter Fuel Payments for millions of pensioners could leave thousands in financial hardship, worrying about how to pay their energy bills amid rising costs.

If you are worried about the Winter Fuel Allowance, Pounder had some words of advice based on his recent experience, saying: “Get in touch with the Citizens Advice Bureau and they’ll send someone out to help you.”

In response to claims that pensioners will struggle this winter as a result of the Government's Winter Fuel policy, a DWP spokesman said: “Over one million pensioners will continue to receive the Winter Fuel Payment.

“We continue to urge anyone who thinks they may be entitled to Pension Credit to check now.”
