Author and political commentator Douglas Murray says action, not inquiries is required to tackle rape gangs in Britain.
Speaking on GB News, Murray said calls for a national inquiry are a “distraction” from the root problem.
Labour sparked confusion this week when safeguarding minister Jess Phillips failed to provide an update on the five local inquiries it promised in January to Parliament in a statement on Tuesday.
Keir Starmer said any further local inquiries into the scandal will be funded if deemed necessary.
Murray told Camilla Tominey inquiries will bear little fruit and the threat of Islamism must be tackled head-on, but Westminster has little appetite to do so.
“I’m not a fan of inquiries into this, I’ll be frank. I think they are a distraction”, he said.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS
“I think it’s lamentable that Angela Rayner and the Labour Government has seen fit not to even have inquiries into this, but we have had plenty of inquiries into the rape gangs.
“We’ve had plenty. Where do they go? What happens? Who acts on them? Why are there no prosecutions? Why is there no speed-up in prosecutions?
“The number of victims against the number of people prosecuted in the last two decades does not stack up.”
He continued: “When I hear people say, ‘this is going to upset members of the Pakistani community’, I say, ‘why would they be upset?’
“If members of my community were found to be gang-raping girls based on their race, I would want to know about it and I would want those people to be prosecuted. I would be shameful about it, but I would want those people to go to prison.
“Why after all these years do we have people saying, ‘it’s racist or Islamophobic to even mention this’, it is too late in the game to play those games.
“We should be utterly intolerant of anyone at this stage in 2025, knowing what we know about these mass crimes claiming that the best thing you can do is have yet another inquiry which will be shelved by yet another government.
“It is time we actually did things in this country rather than just doing inquiries into them.”
Murray said we should “keep shouting from the rooftops” about the issue and praised GB News’s Charlie Peters’ work in shedding a light on some of the scandal’s horrors.
“He’s done great work on this”, he told Camilla.
Starmer has vowed to “get on and implement the recommendations we’ve already got” to tackle the issue.
The prime minister was referring to the Alexis Jay national review, which was published in 2022 after hearing from 7,300 victims and survivors of sexual abuse.
