Keir Starmer has missed a good opportunity to shore up US relations by not attending the re-opening of Notre Dame Cathedral, according to GB News’s Emily Carver.

She spoke as President-elect Donald Trump heads to the French capital to attend the grand celebration, which takes place this weekend.

British representation will come in the form of royalty with Prince William in attendance, but the Prime Minister won’t be setting foot on French soil.

“Donald Trump is in Paris for this reopening and the Prince of Wales is there”, Emily said.

“Presumably Keir Starmer could have gone if he wanted to. Why has he missed such an occasion?”

She added: “It’s utterly bizarre. What an opportunity.”

The president-elect will join approximately 50 world leaders at the high-profile celebration of the restored gothic cathedral, which was ravaged by fire in 2019.

Prince William will also be present at the ceremony, following an invitation from French President Emmanuel Macron.

The medieval cathedral has undergone a painstaking €700m (£580m) reconstruction effort over five years, made possible through donations from 150 countries.

Trump praised Macron on Truth Social, saying: "President Emmanuel Macron has ensured Notre Dame is restored to its highest glory – and even beyond."

The Prince of Wales, 42, is attending the ceremony at the request of the British government, Kensington Palace announced.

He will join more than 1,500 guests for the service, which will be led by Laurent Ulrich, the Catholic archbishop of Paris.

The Prince last encountered Trump during the latter's state visit to the UK in 2019, when they attended a white tie state banquet at Buckingham Palace alongside Queen Elizabeth II and the then Prince Charles.

The reopening marks a significant milestone for the Gothic masterpiece, which will once again welcome tourists and Catholic faithful following its extensive restoration.
