GB News commentator Andrew Pierce has warned that projected population growth will cause the UK to "grind to a halt" due to pressure on public services.

"No hospitals, no schools, not enough homes, the country is going to grind to a halt," Andrew warned.

GB News Political Correspondent Katherine Foster highlighted concerns over funding, noting that "vastly more resources" would be needed for school places, hospitals and houses.

Andrew also expressed worries about social cohesion, stating: "People already feel like strangers in certain towns and cities - this is going to make it so much worse."

The UK population is projected to reach 72.5 million by mid-2032, according to new figures released today by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The increase of nearly five million from mid-2022's figure of 67.6 million will be driven almost entirely by net migration.

Net migration is expected to total 4.9 million over the 10-year period to 2032.

The level of net migration is projected to average 340,000 per year from mid-2028 onwards, which is lower than current levels.

The number of births and deaths across the period is projected to be almost identical, with approximately 6.8 million births offset by 6.8 million deaths.

While births are expected to increase slightly, deaths are also projected to rise.

This increase in deaths is attributed to the large number of people reaching older ages who were born during the post-Second World War 'baby boom'.

The overall population growth represents a 7.3 per cent increase between mid-2022 and mid-2032, compared with 6.1 per cent over the previous decade.

England's population is projected to grow more quickly than other UK nations, increasing by 7.8 per cent in the decade to mid-2032.

Wales is set to see a 5.9 per cent population increase, while Scotland will grow by 4.4 per cent and Northern Ireland by 2.1 per cent.

Looking further ahead, the ONS projects total UK population growth of 8.9 million between mid-2022 and mid-2047, representing a 13.2 per cent increase.

This 25-year growth projection is lower than the previous quarter-century, when the population rose by 9.3 million (15.9 per cent) between 1997 and 2022.

The ONS figures highlight an increasingly ageing population, with those aged over 85 projected to nearly double to 3.3 million by 2047.

By mid-2032, more than one in 10 (10.3 per cent) of the UK population will be aged 75 and over, up from about one in 11 (9.1 per cent) in mid-2022.

ONS spokesman James Robards said: "These projections are based on current and past trends, and aren't forecasts about what may or may not happen in the future."

The number of people at state pension age is projected to rise by 1.7 million to 13.7 million by mid-2032.
